Yu-Gi-Oh! Card of the Week 20:
Chaos Pod

CHAOS POD
Type: Effect Monster
Earth/Rock/3/800/700
Effect: Flip: All Monsters on their Fields are
shuffled into their owners' decks. Each player
revels cards from the top of his or her deck until
he or she reaches a number of Monsters equal to
the number of Monsters shuffled in. Level 4 or
less Monsters are placed on the Field in face-down
defense mode. Other cards are discarded.

Twenty cards of the week. A card of the week hasn't been done in about three weeks, as I've been a combination of sick, and going through my stuff to be moving. The next two cards of the week (whenever I get to them) will be White Thief and then Don Zaruug. This week is Chaos Pod.

Chaos Pod is a card that you need to have in a certain type of deck. It isn't that you have to build a deck around it; rather, it's suitable only in certain types of decks.

Looking at its statistics, the Chaos Pod stinks. 800/700 isn't going to win you the game. However, its effect is what people are going to be using it for.

Two reasons that Chaos Pod is used: temporary hold-off, and discard. So, what do I mean by "hold-off"? Well, it stops your opponent for attacking for one turn. The Monsters are shuffled back into the owner's decks. Any other Monsters that are encountered are placed in face-down defense mode. Remember that Monsters can only change their modes during the Main Phase. If Monsters are placed face-down, they can't attack during that turn, since they're in defense mode. There is also a good and bad side-effect to this card: if you or your opponent like Monsters with Reverse Effects, this is a chance to get many of them onto the Field.

The real portion of Chaos Pod comes from its discard aspect. The effect goes that you continue to reveal cards from your deck until you reach a number of Monsters equal to what you shuffled in. This doesn mean "playable" Monsters, this just mean Monsters. Those Monsters of level 4 or less are placed on the Field in face-down defense mode. Those other cards that you encounter (Monsters of level 5 or higher, Magic and Trap cards) are discarded. That is the tradeoff to using the card. You could deck your opponent later in the game, or get rid of those powerful cards. You could also very well deck YOURSELF in its use. I guess that's why it's called Chaos Pod...

Edo's Rating: 2 out of 5. Chaos Pod is a card that is hard to use effectively. It's somewhat useful in a discard deck, but be VERY careful when using it in any other decks. It's that unpredictable. I would ask you to avoid it altogether. However, Chaos Pod is also one of the undoings against Exodia decks, so you should use the card at your discretion.
